First aid

Forest School first aid requires a specialized, 16-hour Outdoor First Aid course that also includes Paediatric elements. This ensures we can manage medical emergencies in remote, outdoor environments, treat both children and adult helpers, and comply with Ofsted/EYFS requirements.
Key Requirements
To meet the Forest School Association (FSA) benchmark, your training covers the following specific areas:
  • Duration: 16 contact hours, often delivered as a 2-day course or a blended learning option (part online, part face-to-face). We use the full course face to face
  • Outdoor Focus: Training should align with Institute for Outdoor Learning (IOL) Band 3 guidelines, focusing on environmental hazards (hypothermia, heat stroke) and incident management.
  • Paediatric Element: Must cover infant and child CPR, choking, and specific childhood illnesses to meet childcare and early-years regulations.
  • Validity: Certification lasts for 3 years.
Core Topics Covered
  • Incident Management: Triage, assessing the scene safely, and calling for emergency help from remote locations.
  • Trauma Care: Severe bleeding, fracture management, and head/spinal injuries.
  • Life-Saving Skills: CPR (for infants, children, and adults), recovery positions, and safe use of a defibrillator.
  • Environmental Hazards: Managing hypothermia, shock, anaphylaxis, and burns. All our staff have this certification.

Bad weather conditions at forest school.

Forest School typically operates "in all weathers", following the ethos that "there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing". Rain, snow, and wind are actively embraced for the multisensory learning and resilience they promote. Leaders are highly trained to monitor conditions and follow specific procedures to ensure the children’s safety and wellbeing.

Only times we would cancel a forest school session.

  1. High winds.

  2. Thunder storm.

  3. Local yellow weather warning. We check and record the weather forecast be every session.
